Modello Masking Material Options

Modello Designs offers a variety of masking materials to choose from dependent on your project needs, technique and products used. We believe that our success is hinged on your success, so we strive to provide as much general information as possible on this website to achieve that end. However, products, application techniques and environmental conditions vary widely. We cannot predict or guarantee how our masking products will perform under every condition. FREE product samples are provided upon request so that you can do your own testing to ensure the most successful outcome!

4 mil White Mask
Our most popular, multi-use masking material is our 4 mil white mask. All of the "stock" patterns, available through the Modello Store, are standard-cut from this material. White Mask has a medium-tack adhesive and is easily removable. It is suitable for smooth to semi-smooth concrete finishes. It will not stick to textured or broomed surfaces or those containing a heavier or exposed aggregate. Because is it available in 48" wide rolls, it allows for the cutting of large-scale designs (up to 46" x 8') in one piece. Larger designs can be "tiled", or layed out in sections.

We have used 4 mil white mask successfully with low-relief embossed and inlaid patterns (using fine micro-toppings), gel acid etching, gel-thickened acid stains, and sprayed solvent dyes and sealers.

4 mil Blue Mask
Blue Mask is a vinyl material that has a low-tack adhesive, making it suitable only for very smooth concrete surfaces (such as Colormaker's Super Fine Sgraffino or Concrete Solution's Spray Top System).

Its advantage is that for low-relief embossing its blue color makes it easier to see the pattern beneath for removal. It is also a slightly more rigid vinyl and pulls from the surface easily.

Its limitation is that it is only available in 30" rolls.  Designs wider than 28" must be cut into multiple "tiles" which are matched up upon installation. Additionally the vibrant blue color may make precision colorwork more difficult to judge.

This material is available by request as a subsitute for the standard White Mask when purchasing "stock" designs from our Modello Store at no additional charge when the design width does not exceed 28". All other designs require additional set-up and must be ordered "custom" through the Design Library area.

10 mil Green Mask
Green Mask is a thicker adhesive-backed soft rubber material designed for light sandblasting. As such, it has a more aggressive adhesive backing making it suitable for other techniques (gel etching, positive color, embossing, etc) on rougher concrete surfaces.

Its advantage is that is can be used on concrete surfaces containing light texture and a rougher aggregate.

Its limitation is that the material is limited to a 28" wide design width in one panel or "tile". The aggressive adhesive and softer material makes it more difficult to remove after embossing techniques where the micro-topping has been troweled on thickly. Thinner embossing applications which simply fill in the open design areas are generally OK.

Additionally small, intricate designs are not available in this thicker material.

25 mil Green Mask
As above, this material is designed for sandblasting and can be used in the same way as the 10 mil Green Mask. Due to the thicker nature of the material it's use is limited to larger-scale, simpler designs and patterns.
